Fargo to host Bracketbuster gameFARGO – The Bracketbuster is coming to Fargo. And with it comes the chance North Dakota State will host a college men‘s basketball game that will be broadcast on ESPN.
NDSU head coach Saul Phillips said he’s been told the Bison Sports Arena will be a site for the 10th annual three-day event in the middle of February. It’s considered an early glimpse at NCAA tournament hopefuls and the games pair teams with a similar Ratings Percentage Index power ranking.
“It has a chance to be a really good game,” Phillips said. “The better you play, the better your opponent will be.”
Opponents are normally determined a few weeks in advance.
It will be NDSU’s second foray into the Bracketbuster, which matches mid-major programs against each other. Two years ago, the Bison defeated Wisconsin-Milwaukee of the Horizon League 77-69 in Milwaukee, a game that the Bison thought should have been on national TV considering NDSU’s moderately high RPI.
“We certainly have a chance this year,” Phillips said. “Last time, I thought we had a really good chance.”
Phillips said all Summit League teams will get a Bracketbuster game. The upside is the potential exposure; the downside is it could be a travel game in the middle of a conference race. Phillips said the reaction among league coaches is mixed and he falls somewhere in the middle.
NDSU is expected to release its full schedule within a few weeks.
