Velva fights erosion on levees as crest nearsVELVA, N.D. – Flood-fighting efforts here are still active as rains delayed progress on levees Saturday night and significant erosion is occurring on the clay banks.
The National Guard Quick Response Force was activated to sandbag holes and place plastic on the levees.
Residents of 90 percent of Velva were required to evacuate by Saturday evening.
Fifty airmen and 150 heavy equipment operators remain in town to build up the levees before Monday’s crest of the Souris River.
