NCAA: No policy change on Indian sports nicknames

BISMARCK — An NCAA spokesman says Friday the association has no intention of changing a policy that will penalize the University of North Dakota for keeping its Fighting Sioux nickname.

The statement by spokesman Erik Christianson supports the Big Sky Conference's objections to the nickname.

UND wants to join the conference next July, but the Big Sky commissioner says the school's membership may be in doubt because of its continuing use of the nickname.

The North Dakota Legislature has ordered UND to keep using the Fighting Sioux nickname and a logo that shows the profile of an American Indian warrior.

UND wants a meeting with NCAA officials, North Dakota legislators and the governor to discuss the issue.

The NCAA statement Friday hints there wouldn't be any point to having the meeting.
