Kindred-Richland cruises to semifinal victory at North Dakota Class B state baseball tournament
Kindred-Richland, in its first tournament in 52 years, is one win away from a state title after crushing May-Port-CG 20-1 Friday in the semifinals.
The Vikings will play Grafton in tonight’s state championship game. The Spoilers beat defending champion Velva-Drake-Anamoose 3-1 in the other semifinal.
K-R junior first baseman Austin Dahlgren had three hits, scored three runs and drove in five runs.
The Vikings pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of five Patriots errors. They batted around three times in four innings.
Dahlgren never expected such output.
“No, not in the semifinals at state,” Dahlgren said. “It was one of those games where everything goes wrong for them.”
Pitcher Sean Cose worked three innings to pick up the win. He gave up two hits.
Things could not have started worse for the Patriots and starter Tyler Ust. An error, three hits, two wild pitches and a high fly ball to right that should have been caught – but fell for a hit – staked the Vikings to a 4-1 lead after one inning.
Ust was gone after walking the first batter in the second inning. Nick Rygg relieved and fared no better as Kindred-Richland scored six times in the second to go up 10-1.
The Vikings batted around in the second and third innings. The only threat the Patriots mustered was in the first when Brady Nygaard reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on Ust’s triple.
Cose also had two hits, scored three times and drove in three runs.
Daniel Julson pitched two innings of hitless relief and joined the hit parade, going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and three runs scored.
Ben Becher had two hits and two RBIs and Casey Reinke scored twice.
Kindred-Richland coach Scott Milbrandt said he hopes the Vikings can keep it going one more day.
“We’ve had seven, eight, nine hits before, but nothing like this,” Milbrandt said. “Our kids are focused. They understand we had good hitting today and we have to come ready.”
