Higher education notebook: NDSU students are big on giving

FARGO - Hundreds of North Dakota State University students will give back to the community in a big way this week.

Students will participate in various service projects Tuesday during a day called The Big Event.

The volunteers will be matched with different nonprofit groups in Fargo-Moorhead, such as the Dorothy Day Food Pantry, Churches United for the Homeless and the Fargo Park District.

More than 300 students had registered so far as of last week, said Tyson Morlock, an NDSU senior and coordinator with the Volunteer Network.

“To have this much of a turnout shows how the students here at NDSU feel about the community,” Morlock said.

The day is modeled after The Big Event that was established in 1982 at Texas A&M University by a former student leader.

Distinguished service

A secretary at Concordia College has received the Ole and Lucy Flaat Distinguished Service Award.

Darla Ward, who works in the physical education and health/athletics departments, has worked at Concordia since 1975 and is often the public face of Memorial Auditorium and Cobber Athletics.

West Nile research

The University of North Dakota will receive a $2.9 million competitive grant from the U.S. Department of Energy for research into treatments to combat West Nile virus, the state’s congressional delegation announced.

The grant allows UND, in partnership with Avianax and the Mayo Clinic, to continue work to develop treatments and diagnostic products that use goose antibodies to fight the West Nile virus.

Faculty emeritus award

The North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton will honor Harlan Arneson with the title of faculty emeritus at spring graduation.

Arneson spent 37 years at NDSCS teaching in automotive technology, instructing more than 3,000 students.
