North Dakota county, hospital settle over AL fugitive's billDICKINSON — Stark County is paying a Bismarck hospital $25,000 to settle a lawsuit over an Alabama fugitive's medical expenses.
St. Alexius Medical Center had sued the county over a $73,000 hospital bill for Jacquelin Mink, one of four Alabama fugitives involved in a standoff with law officers in southwest North Dakota in June 2009. Stark County maintained it was not responsible for the bill because Mink was not arrested until after she was released from the hospital.
Hospital attorney Sean Smith told The Dickinson Press that the settlement is less than the hospital wanted but that it was "reasonable." County Commission Chairman Ken Zander said a compromise was preferable to a trial.
