Dike construction in Oakport under wayOAKPORT TOWNSHIP, Minn. – In response to National Weather Service forecasts that the weekend could bring more moisture, the Oakport Township Board has decided to proceed with construction or completion of several temporary dikes.
That includes construction of the south portion of the Crystal Creek/
McCann’s dike, which will be extended north if necessary. Construction begins today, but township Chairman Jeff Schaumann said every effort will be made to keep Oakport Street open to two-way traffic.
Schaumann also said construction on the West and Brentwood dikes should be completed by this evening.
In other news:
- Although significant improvements have been made to the sanitary sewer system, Schaumann advised residents to plug lower-level drains as river levels increase beyond 35 feet.
- Schaumann reminded Oakport residents that the town board will not order sand. Those who want sand can contact Aggregate Industries at (701) 277-0174 to receive a negotiated Oakport Township price. People who need sandbags can contact a town supervisor. Those who wish to arrange for sandbag volunteers can call Chris McCarthy at (701) 371-2047 and mention they are from Oakport.
- The Minnesota National Guard will begin monitoring dikes today.
