Home in Amenia, N.D., hit by overland floodingAMENIA, N.D. – Overland flooding struck a farmhouse near here late Tuesday night.
Cass County Deputy Gail Wischmann said the Erb family had sandbagged around their residence, but the wall wasn’t built high enough to hold back floodwaters that began flowing into the Erbs’ basement about 8:45 p.m.
Delores and Paul Erb live at 2636 154th Ave. SE in Amenia, which is about 20 miles northwest of Fargo.
Wischmann said Delores Erb mentioned that she warned her husband that they ought to reinforce their sandbag defenses, but he thought they’d be OK.
“They probably lived there for years, and it’s probably never been an issue – but yeah, this one time it became a problem,” Wischmann said.
Cass County responders were prepared to deliver sand to the residence late Tuesday, so the Erbs could begin filling extra empty bags they had on hand.
Wischmann said a neighbor offered to help the Erbs pump out the water from their basement overnight.
