People who helped Perham player survive honoredMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — There's a special halftime tribute Friday night at the boys state basketball tournament to honor the people who saved a Perham High School player after he collapsed during a game this winter.
Zach Gabbard suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on Jan. 20 and needed open-heart surgery. His Perham team is in the Class 2A semifinals at Target Center on Friday night.
During halftime of the first semifinal game, Gabbard's father, Steve, will tell the story of his son's collapse during a game played in Glyndon and remind people of the importance of CPR and defibrillator training.
Others who had a hand in responding to the emergency and helping Gabbard survive will also be there.
Gabbard is going through rehab. He surprised his team by sitting behind the bench in the quarterfinal win on Wednesday.
