Boys basketball: Squirrels get past Raiders

As the final seconds ticked off the clock late in the fourth quarter and his team down by one point, Central Cass sophomore Ellery Bresnahan wanted to drive left for a final shot.

He ended up going right, but Bresnahan still made the shot with 3.1 seconds left in regulation, helping the Squirrels to a 54-51 win over Maple Valley in the North Dakota Class B, District 2 boys semifinals on Saturday at the Fargo Civic Center.

Central Cass plays Fargo Oak Grove in the District 2 championship game 8 p.m. Monday at the Fargo Civic Center.

“The play was designed for me to go to the left, but it wasn’t there so I crossed back and put the shot up,” said Bresnahan, who finished with 10 points.

It was that kind of night for the Squirrels.

Not much went right at the beginning, but when push came to shove the team found a way to win.

Foul troubles, turnovers and missed opportunities had Central Cass on its heels much of the game.

Matt Zimmerman opened the fourth quarter with a three-point play, giving the Squirrels a 34-33 lead, which was the team’s first lead since early in the first quarter.

The Raiders later went on an 8-0 run and appeared to be on their way to victory.

Central Cass pulled to within two points when Bresnahan connected for the Squirrels’ first 3-pointer of the game with 1:40 left.

Maple Valley’s Dylan Lerud responded with a field goal on the other end, making it 49-45, but failed to complete the 3-point play by missing a free throw.

Zimmerman quickly responded with a field goal and the Squirrels stole Maple Valley’s in-bounds play, setting up Garrett Ebach’s 3-pointer that gave Central Cass a 50-49 lead.

But again, it was short lived.

Maple Valley’s Jordan Haseleu scored with 13.4 seconds left.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, that was too much time for Bresnahan.

Jordan Kressin iced the game, sinking two free throws after being fouled following a steal of Maple Valley’s in-bounds lob.

Oak Grove rallies for win over Kindred

A 17-0 run in the fourth quarter proved to be all Fargo Oak Grove needed to top Kindred 73-56 in the North Dakota District 2 semifinals on Saturday.

Shayden Akason led the Grovers with 21 points and connected for four 3-pointers.

“We played on our heels weren’t aggressive early,” Oak Grove coach Kyle Card said. “We made some shots, but it came down to our defense and our depth.”
