Westboro Baptist Church plans to protest Fargo South's production of 'Laramie Project'

The Westboro Baptist Church, a Kansas-based flock known for its vocal protests against homosexuality, will bring its crusade to Fargo as the church plans to protest Fargo South High School Theatre’s presentation of “The Laramie Project.”

According to the group's website, the protest is planned for 6:45-7:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at Fargo South. That coincides with the school’s performance of “The Laramie Project,” which is scheduled to start at 7:30 that night. The stage production is the story of Matthew Shepherd, a gay University of Wyoming student who was murdered outside of Laramie Wyo., in 1998.

This isn’t the first time the Westboro Baptist Church has raised its voice in Fargo. The group, which isn’t associated with any branches of the Baptist denomination, protested the 2006 funeral of National Guard Spc. Michael Hermanson. At the time, the church was claiming the deaths of soldiers in the Iraq war were a punishment sent from God regarding homosexual lifestyles in America.
