West Fargo bus driver accused of DUI bails out

A West Fargo school bus driver arrested for alleged drunken driving Wednesday afternoon was released from jail on Friday after he made an initial court appearance, his attorney said.

Steven Clifford Sauer, 59, of Fargo, was released after appearing in West Fargo Municipal Court and posting $200 bail, said William Kirschner, his attorney.

West Fargo police claim they smelled alcohol on the bus driver after his bus got stuck in a snowbank about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of 32nd Avenue South.

Police administered field sobriety tests before Sauer was arrested. They have declined to release results of those tests.

A blood test was also taken, but Kirschner said he hasn’t seen results from the blood work. Police have said it should take seven to 10 days to get the blood test results.

Sauer was driving to pick up about 40 students on an afternoon route serving Aurora Elementary. He was employed by Valley Bus Co., a contractor that runs bus routes for schools in both Fargo and West Fargo, but he was fired following his arrest.
