Fargo North boys basketball team avenges previous defeat with win over Fargo South

The Fargo North boys basketball team turned the tables on Fargo South this time.

The Spartans, who were defeated by the Bruins in heartbreaking fashion on their own court earlier this season, beat South 52-44 on Tuesday night before a packed house at South High School.

“We definitely came out and knew we needed to play like a team today,” said North senior Nick Schultz. “That’s what we were lacking. Now that we have that down I think it’s going to be a better year for us.”

South (8-5, 8-3), which has now lost two in a row in the Eastern Dakota Conference, held a 26-22 halftime lead despite shooting just 34 percent from the floor.

The Bruins were led by guard Ronny Kazane, who scored 11 first-half points.

But it didn’t last.

North (9-4, 8-3) used its zone defense to fluster South’s shooters for much of the second half.

Bruins senior Taylor Parker was limited to 1 of 13 shooting. He entered the game averaging 14.3 points a game.

Gabe Deng failed to score on four shots, and Andrew Okland had just six points.

The duo, which normally combines for an average of 40 points, had nine on Tuesday night.

“We just didn’t make our adjustments,” South coach Mike Hendrickson said. “We shot 32 percent. You aren’t going to win very many basketball games if you shoot 32 percent. … You can’t question how hard the kids played. We were just fighting ourselves the whole night.”

The Spartans defensive intensity bled into the offense, where anything in the paint was hard to convert.

Schultz finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. Nathan Ross had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

North has won four of its last five to claw within a game of first-place Fargo Shanley. South dropped into a tie for second place with North.

“As leaders and seniors, we all got up for this game,” Schultz said. “We knew we had to lead this team. Everyone did their part. We know our roles now and it just worked out really well for us tonight.”
