Fargo South girls basketball team makes another patented run toward EDC title bid
Meghan Roehrich had 31 points and 10 rebounds to lead the No. 4-ranked Bruins to a 67-43 EDC win against rival Fargo North to extend the team’s winning streak to six Tuesday night at South High School.
“We’re just playing as a team, making good passes to each other, playing together and finding the open man,” Roehrich said. “I just think we picked up our intensity more.”
South (10-3, 8-3) is now just a game behind league leaders Fargo Shanley and West Fargo, with several pivotal games remaining.
The Bruins, who have won three consecutive regular-season league titles, opened the season 3-3 in the EDC.
However, things have changed considerably since back-to-back losses to North and Shanley about a month ago.
South has come together as a cohesive group, playing more aggressively and making the extra pass when necessary on offensive.
They are beginning to believe in each other more and more, Roehrich said.
And, of course, there is Roehrich, the EDC scoring leader entering the game with 24.7 points a game.
She dismantled the Spartans with spinning drives to the basket. She connected on 11 of 23 field goals and 9 of 12 free throws.
Alley Fisher provided 16 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Katie Felch had seven points and nine rebounds.
The Bruins’ aggressive play made sure the game was never in doubt in the second half.
“South is a good basketball team,” North coach Derek Ouren said. “They are really hitting their peak, going at it really good. Right now, we are just kind of going through our own thing. We’re trying to find kids that want to lead and kids that want to step up.”
The first half was a struggle for both teams.
North committed 14 turnovers in the first 18 minutes, helping the Bruins slowly inch ahead.
Spartans leading scorer Alyssa Dehne couldn’t find the range from the outside, going 1-for-6 from the floor en route to four first-half points.
South also made it difficult for North to get the ball inside to posts Kira Larson and Mia Lopez. The duo combined for eight first-half points.
The Bruins relied heavily on Roehrich. Most of her work came on drives to the lane or grinding work in the paint.
South held a 25-16 halftime lead.
“We can still get there (to the EDC title). We’re just going to have to work really hard,” Roehrich said. “It’s in the back of our head.”
