Minot State professor says geography bee unfair to girlsA Minot (N.D.) State University professor and longtime judge for the state's geography bee says he was punished because he complained that the contest was unfair to girls.
Eric Clausen has filed a lawsuit in federal court against the National Geographic Society and several other groups. Clausen says the bee violates federal laws on gender equity because a large majority of the state winners are boys.
Clausen says the geographic society retaliated by warning him not to interfere and refusing to fund a grant for his geography program.
A similar lawsuit filed by Clausen in 2009 was dismissed by a federal judge.
The National Geographic Society says it has long acknowledged that boys do better on the bee than girls and has assisted in efforts to find out why.
