Boys hockey: Spuds net OT victory
It looked like win No. 8 was in the bag for the Moorhead boys hockey team until Centennial tied it at 3-3 with 16 seconds left in regulation.
That is, until the Uglem brothers did something about it. The brothers created a 2-on-1 with Nick Uglem setting up his brother, Tony, for the game-winning goal helping Moorhead win 4-3 in overtime on Saturday at the Moorhead Sports Center.
“It is not like because we are brothers we know what’s going on,” said Tony Uglem about the game-winning goal. “But you know what your linemates are going to do because you’ve worked with them so much.”
It appeared the work in practice paid off. Moorhead (14-4-1) was in its own zone when Nick Uglem snatched the puck and flew down the ice. Tony Uglem was on the right and when Nick did enough to draw the defenseman, he slid it over to his brother, who flicked it in for his second game-winning goal of the season.
It was also for Moorhead’s second straight overtime win.
Beating Centennial (8-9-1) wraps up what has been one interesting January for the Spuds.
The month started with suspensions following a hazing investigation. It ended with Moorhead winning 10 games in January and finishing the month
That’s something the storied 2005 team or the 2009 team, both of which lost in the state championship finals, never did.
“Someone asked me the other day if I am surprised with the way this team is going and I told them that I was,” said Moorhead coach Dave Morinville. “This is a resilient group and they are finding ways to win games. This is a game where if you make it to state, this is a carryover game.”
Morinville said following the 6-5 overtime win over Brainerd on Thursday, he was expecting his team to have a sluggish first period, which was scoreless.
Centennial broke the tie, taking a 1-0 lead off a Riley Colvard goal with 11:57 left before Moorhead’s Sean Kunkel tied it at 1-1 nearly three minutes later.
Perhaps the third period was a sign of things to come with Tony Uglem setting up Nick Uglem for a goal, giving the Spuds a 2-1 lead barely a minute in.
That’s when it went back and forth. Centennial tied it at 2-2 three minutes later then Moorhead takes a 3-2 lead with 0:48 seconds left.
The Cougars pulled their goalie and a scramble on net led to Colvard scoring his second goal of the night tying it at 3-3 before the Uglems won it in overtime.
Winning close games is a test Moorhead has passed in its last two games. Next week could be the toughest week this season.
Moorhead gets Class 2A power No. 5 Benilde-St. Margaret’s (14-2), which boasts defenseman and Wisconsin commit Patrick Daly, one of the state’s top recruits.
It doesn’t get easier Saturday when Moorhead hosts Grand Rapids (15-3-1), which upset defending state champs Edina earlier in the season.
If that’s not enough then try this. Moorhead gets Minnesota Class 2A, Section 8 leader Bemidji in the following week.
