Former Fargo North star Savageau joins DragonsMinnesota State Moorhead has added another young perimeter player to its program.
Former Fargo North star and North Dakota Mr. Basketball finalist Nik Savageau has joined the Dragons after transferring from the University of Sioux Falls.
“I think he’s a true point guard, and that is something that we needed coming in as a freshman,” MSUM coach Chad Walthall said. “He is very athletic, he is a good shooter and he knows how to get his teammates involved. … We are very fortunate to have him in the program.”
Savageau was a 2010 North Dakota Mr. Basketball finalist, averaging 21.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.7 assists in his final season with the Spartans. He started this school year at Sioux Falls before deciding to transfer to MSUM.
The 5-foot-10 Savageau will sit out the remainder of this season and won’t be eligible to play until the second semester next season, Walthall said.
Savageau gives MSUM another young guard who will be ready to play next season. True freshman Jordan Riewer, who played his high school basketball at Staples-Motley, is taking a redshirt this season. The Dragons currently have a number of guards on the active roster, but they are all juniors.
“It’s really important to have Nik and Jordan,” Walthall said. “Those are guys who are going to be ready to step in when those (juniors) leave here a year from now. And they both could help us next season, too.”
