Perham athlete transferred to University of Minnesota for special treatment

A Perham, Minn., high school basketball player who collapsed during a game Thursday night has been transferred from a Fargo hospital to the University of Minnesota for specialized treatment.

Zach Gabbard underwent heart surgery at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo after he collapsed on the basketball court during a game against Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton at Glyndon Thursday night.

Gabbard’s family posted a note today on the CaringBridge.com website letting supporters know that the high school junior was still in critical condition but was stable enough to be transferred to the Twin Cities.

“Keep the prayers coming for a safe transfer and more positive progress,” the posting said.

A spokeswoman for Sanford Health said late today that Gabbard had been transferred but she said she could not say when it happened or where he was going to.
