DICKINSON, N.D. – Eight different players scored during Saturday afternoon’s girls hockey game between West Fargo and Dickinson High.
All of the goals, however, were scored by West Fargo players as the Packers won handily 14-0.
West Fargo junior forward Britney Yliniemi recorded a hat trick while Kacie Johnson, Katlyn Springer and Hayley Walsh each chipped in two.
Dickinson eighth-grader Rachel Lantz had her hands full all game long against the potent Packers offensive attack that tallied 80 shots on goal.
Lantz stopped a career-high 66.
“Whenever a goalie faces 80 shots, some are going to go in,” Dickinson head coach Jennifer Schnaidt said. “She had a tough night.”
Stopping 33 shots in the first period alone, Lantz kept the Midgets (3-12, 1-10 state) in the game until the midway point of the second period.
“She played real well. There were a lot of pucks coming at her,” West Fargo head coach Pat Johnson said. “I think she just got tired.”
It was another story for Packers goaltender KeerieAnne Bruce, who faced just 11 shots as the Midgets had trouble producing offense against the much-faster Packers defense.
Yliniemi scored two of her three goals in the first period. The first came just 17 seconds after the puck dropped.
Johnson assisted on goals to Paige Swanson, Katlyn Springer and Walsh. Allison Springer and Katlyn Springer each recorded two assists.
Leading 10-0 at the start of the third period the scoring continued for the Packers (13-1, 12-1 state) when Yliniemi poked her third of the game past Lantz 2:09 into the period.
“We changed our defense a little for this game … we went to more of a man-on-man type of zone,” Schnaidt said. “It helped a little, but I thought we played a much better game than last time.”
The last time these teams faced one another, the story was much the same as West Fargo prevailed 20-0 on Dec. 3.
