Perham basketball player remains in critical condition

A Perham, Minn., boys basketball player who collapsed during a game Thursday remained in critical condition Saturday night at a Fargo hospital.

Zach Gabbard, a high school junior, underwent heart surgery Friday at Sanford Medical Center.

The surgery involved attaching a device that will allow Gabbard’s heart to rest for a few days, according to a journal entry on CaringBridge.com, a website used to keep people up-to-date on a patient’s condition.

As of late Saturday, Gabbard’s page on CaringBridge had been viewed more than 24,000 times.

Calvary Lutheran Church in Perham is inviting people to gather at 3 p.m. today to pray for Gabbard.
