Dan Hammer to return to TV as sports director at Valley News Live
“Frankly, I’ll be much more comfortable getting off work at 10:45 at night,” he said.
He’ll do that starting next week. The veteran area sportscaster will return to an old job as Valley News Live sports director for KXJB-TV and KVLY-TV in Fargo. Hammer spent 21 years in television, but resigned eight years ago for a sales and marketing position with Radio Fargo-Moorhead.
He’s been the sports director for RFM the last four years and hosted the Dan Hammer Show on 740-AM from noon-1 p.m. He started his work day at 5 a.m.
Joel Heitkamp, operations manager for Radio Fargo-Moorhead, said the plan is to keep Hammer’s radio show local. Guest hosts will be used until a replacement can be found.
Hammer will also have to give up being the radio play-by-play voice of University of North Dakota football games on WDAY-AM.
Hammer, 52, said he’s missed the TV side of the business and said opportunities in a stable Fargo-Moorhead market don’t come along that often.
“I’m still wired deep down as a TV guy,” he said. “I grew up on TV and I think I know TV. Ever since I left TV eight years ago, the most frequently asked question I get is, ‘Do I miss TV?’ When I hear that, I think of how much I miss TV.”
