Sen. Kent Conrad is a deficit hawk

John Manesis wrote in the Jan. 11 Forum that he doesn’t think Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., should be referred to as a “deficit hawk.” Oops, Mr. Manesis, your information is wrong.

I frequently watch C-SPAN and have applauded Conrad’s knowledge, charts and speeches on the importance of getting the budget and the debt under control. He knows the impact funding policies and tax provisions have on citizens and on the economy. He knows what will be good for North Dakotans and what cuts will harm us least.

He votes to improve jobs and the common good when that is needed. But he always has his eye on the bottom line. Conrad didn’t get his nickname from thin air, he earned it through his persistence from those who observe his work and share his concern.

Conrad is a wise steward of our federal budget and a stickler for our economic security. That is why he is called a “deficit hawk.” It’s a compliment and a title well deserved.
