Girls basketball: Bruins surge in win over Packers

Meghan Roehrich got her points, but the Fargo South Bruins were at their best Saturday when the offense was diverse.

All five Bruins starters scored during a decisive second-half run. That surge fueled South to a

71-64 road victory over No. 2-ranked West Fargo in Eastern Dakota Conference girls basketball.

“We talked about that at halftime,” South coach Craig Flaagan said. “She (Roehrich) can’t be our whole offense. At halftime I think we got the point across that we need everybody.”

South (6-5, 5-3 EDC points) handed the Packers (7-2, 8-1) their first EDC loss this season. West Fargo had won its three previous games.

“I think we just take away that we know we can play with the better teams in the league,” said Roehrich, who scored a game-high 28 points.

West Fargo led by as many as seven points early in the second half, but were unable to contain Roehrich – the leading scorer in the EDC at more than 25 points per game – and her supporting cast down the stretch. South scored 42 points in the game’s final 16 minutes.

“We’ve got to shore up some things on defense,” West Fargo coach Barb Metcalf said. “When you give up (71) points, in my mind, you’re not going to win many games. We pride ourselves on the blue-collar defensive style of play. When our defense isn’t where it is supposed to be, that affects our offense as far as confidence.”

West Fargo built a 37-30 lead with 15 minutes, 46 seconds remaining in the second half after senior center Danielle Nelson scored on a putback.

That’s when Roehrich and company took over.

The Bruins scored 19 of the next 24 points. Roehrich and Sara Rydell each scored five points during that stretch. Alli Koenig added four points, Alley Fisher chipped in three and Anna Diederich also had two. Rydell capped the game-changing surge with two free throws that gave the Bruins a 49-45 lead with 10:07 remaining.

South never trailed in the final 11 minutes.

“You got to give the hustle to Fargo South. They came ready to play,” said Metcalf. “I felt the other players surrounding Roehrich really stepped up.”
