Fargo Shanley defeats Fargo Davies in boys basketball

Scoring hasn’t really been an issue with the Fargo Shanley boys basketball team, but defense, at times, has been.

An 11-point loss to Fargo North a week ago made the team rethink some things. Namely defense, and that restarted a season-long goal of holding teams under 50 points.

The Deacons made that happen Saturday with a 71-49 dismantling of Fargo Davies in the Valley News Live/Scheels Shootout at the Fargodome.

“We put our focus on defense,” said Shanley senior swingman Myles Montplaisir. “Because even if you have an off night with your shooting, defense is always there. You can always play good defense.”

Part of playing good defense requires knowing your enemy and Shanley (6-2, 5-2 EDC) did its homework.

The Deacons knew to beat Davies (1-6, 1-5 EDC) meant taking the ball away from the guards and making Davies rely on the inside game.

Doing that gave Shanley an edge in so many ways. It gave forward A.J. Jacobson a chance to snatch seven rebounds and senior forward Dylan Dunn enough space to grab 10 boards to go along with his 12 points for a double-double.

“We were also not trying to give up a lot of offensive rebounds,” Jacobson said. “Doing that I think really limited what they could do.”

He was right. Shanley outrebounded Davies 28-16. Another asset that helped Shanley was passing. Jacobson said finding a scorer really isn’t a problem, because Shanley has more than its fair share of shooters. Jacobson tied the team-high with three assists with Shanley having 13 dishes in the game. Davies only had five.

It’s like Montplaisir said, defense always works even if the scoring isn’t there, which in Shanley’s case was ever present.

Shanley finished with five players in double figures led by Jacobson’s game-high 17 points. He scored 10 in the second half, but it was Montplaisir that really came alive in the second half.

DAVIES: Kozlowski 10, Siewert 7, Camrud 8, Jordahl 15, Hendrickson 2, Barnes 3, Potter 4.

SHANLEY: Rodenbiker 11, Jacobson 17, Montplaisir 12, Dunn 12, Buth 2, Dancer 5, Strom 12.

Half: Shanley 36, Davies 26.
