Boys basketball: Parker's 26 points lead Fargo South past West Fargo

Taylor Parker didn’t want to overdo it.

However, the Fargo South senior guard was feeling pretty good about his shooting touch Saturday night.

“I felt like I could just keep shooting all night,” Parker said. “Coach probably wouldn’t have liked that.”

Bruins coach Mike Hendrickson undoubtedly enjoyed Parker’s performance. Parker scored 26 points to lead the No. 3 South to a 70-57 Eastern Dakota Conference boys basketball victory against No. 5 West Fargo during the Valley News Live/Scheels Shootout at the Fargodome.

South (6-3, 7-1) maintained a 1½ game lead in the EDC with a dominant second half. The Bruins pounded the ball inside to athletic 6-foot-4 center Gabe Deng, who delivered 16 second-half points. A 20-6 run helped South break away from the Packers.

West Fargo (5-4, 4-4) struggled to score early in the second half, going more than three minutes without a basket as the Bruins pulled away.

“We had a nice first half, good tempo for us, and we held South to 25 points,” West Fargo coach Greg Limke said. “It was a really good effort. There are a couple times in a game when you can make a difference, and coming out in the second half is one of those. We didn’t establish ourselves there.”

While Deng provided the inside presence for the Bruins, Parker was the team’s primary outside threat. Parker drilled six 3-pointers, scoring 13 in each half. Every time West Fargo made a run to get back into the game, Parker and South had an answer.

The Bruins outrebounded the Packers 41-34, and held West Fargo to 35 percent from the floor.

The Packers have lost three straight since opening the year 5-1. South extended its winning streak to six games.
