Girls basketball: Kindred trumps Grovers

Kindred junior Braidy Dahl works feverishly on her low-post game everyday in practice.

She works on positioning. She works on her release. She works on contorting her body to get a clean look at the basket.

She works so it can all comes together perfectly in a game as it did on Friday night.

Dahl scored 15 of her 29 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Vikings to a 63-56 North Dakota Class B girls basketball victory against Fargo Oak Grove at Darwin Gorder Gymnasium.

“Our team is really good high-low, and they look at the posts pretty well,” Dahl said. “If we do a good enough job pinning, they will get it into us.”

Dahl, a 5-foot-10 forward, was nearly unstoppable in the paint during crunch time.

With her team down 40-39 heading into the fourth quarter, Dahl ratcheted up her game.

She drilled six field goals in the fourth and hit 3 of 3 free throws.

Oak Grove threw everything they could at Dahl in an attempt to slow her down. But nothing worked.

“She was definitely the difference,” Grovers coach Jared Bledsoe said. “We matched up well with her, she just wanted the ball and went and got it.”

Oak Grove went toe-to-toe with Kindred for the entire game, exchanging the lead several times.

Kindred held a 25-23 halftime lead.

Dahl and Kellie Schmit combined for 32 points in the second half for the Vikings.

Schmit finished with 22 points. The rest of Kindred’s lineup combined for 12 points in the game.

Rachel Osmundson finished with 15 points to lead the Grovers. Hannah Kelley had 14 for Oak Grove.

“We came out knowing that we had to play harder,” Dahl said of the fourth quarter Kindred surge. “They are obviously a good team, and they are pretty scrappy. So we went in there and thought that if we run the plays right like our coaches told us, screen right, look for the open shots, we would hopefully get the layup.”
