Clay County gets grant for snowmobile patrols

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has received a state grant to step up enforcement of snowmobile laws and promote snowmobile safety.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources grant will fund about 110 hours of overtime for deputies and DNR conservation officers to patrol Clay County’s more than 180 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Minnesota recorded 19 snowmobile-related deaths last year, more than 70 percent of which were alcohol-related, the release stated. The sheriff’s office and DNR recommend no alcohol consumption when snowmobiling.
