Fargo synagogue receives threat: Phone message warns of ‘special package’

Fargo police took a report last week of a threatening phone message left at Fargo’s lone synagogue.

Police were called on Jan. 5 at 11:17 a.m. to Temple Beth El, 809 11th Ave. S., on the reported harassment, Sgt. Mark Lykken said.

Lykken said the caller in the phone message spoke of having a “special package” for the synagogue. Also, the unidentified caller “mentioned something about jihad,” Lykken said.

The message came from a phone with a Florida-based area code, he said. Synagogue officials told police they have no enemies and didn’t know who the caller might be, Lykken said.

No official report was written, and information about the call wasn’t forwarded to federal authorities, Lykken said.

Officers in the southern district of Fargo that includes Temple Beth El were informed about the threat, he said. A phone call left at Temple Beth El seeking comment wasn’t returned Tuesday afternoon.
