Clay County says recount payment inadequateIt cost Clay County about $1,400 to recount ballots in the 2010 Minnesota gubernatorial race, but the state’s reimbursement to the county amounted to $578, County Auditor Lori Johnson said Monday.
She said the major cost of the recount involved staff time for one day and the expense of hiring election judges.
Election judges cost about $667, she said.
State officials sent county auditors a survey asking whether they felt their recount costs had been adequately reimbursed.
Johnson said she suspects many counties, like Clay, felt underpaid and she said she hopes that when the surveys are reviewed state lawmakers will approve additional payments to counties.
