Odd package closes Metro station near US CapitolWASHINGTON — A suspicious package is disrupting commuters headed to the Capitol.
The Capitol South Metro station, which is about two blocks from the Capitol building, is closed.
Capitol Police are tightly controlling where people can walk outside the station Monday morning. Riders trying to leave the station were initially redirected to other stations. Others were later allowed to take an elevator and exit about a block from where the package was found.
It wasn't clear whether additional precautions were being taken because of the shooting Saturday of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was wounded during a meeting with constituents in Arizona.
Capitol Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider says Capitol Police are investigating and interviewing one person. She says a hazardous devices unit was at the scene.
