Police evacuate area after gas leak in Detroit Lakes

At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, police and fire crews were dispatched to the 1200 block of Summit Avenue in Detroit Lakes, Minn., to investigate a natural gas odor.

The gas supplier, Minnesota Energy, determined there was a gas leak in that area, and police evacuated a 300-foot radius.

As of press time, crews were still trying to locate the exact site of the break.

Residents were not expected to be allowed back to their homes before 3 a.m. today, Detroit Lakes Police Chief Kel Keena said in a press release. Officials did not say how many residents were evacuated.

The area is on the south end of town, near the lake.
