Snowmobiler drowns after sled enters lake

NEVIS, Minn. – A snowmobiler drowned Thursday evening after his sled fell through the ice on Third Crow Wing Lake near Nevis.

According to the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office:

Lukas Neubarth and Thomas Plendl, both of Brownton, were operating a snowmobile on the lake and towing a fish house near open water at the mouth of a river.

The snowmobile and fish house went into the water, and the men were submerged. Plendl was able to climb onto an ice shelf, but then re-entered the water in an attempt to find Neubarth.

Plendl lost contact with Neubarth before he was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Park Rapids.

Plendl was released without injuries.

The sheriff’s office said all search and recovery efforts were suspended until daylight “due to extreme blizzard conditions and darkness.”

A dive team found Neubarth’s body in 12 feet of water, near where the snowmobile and fish house sank, at 12:22 p.m. Friday.
