Girls basketball: Rebels combine luck, skill: D-G-F girls pull out victory over Warren-Alvarado-Oslo

GLYNDON, Minn. – Fighting off rallies and last-minute comebacks are great and all, but sometimes you need luck.

Steve Molstre told his team that after the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton girls basketball team squeaked out a

62-55 win over Warren-Alvarado-Oslo on Tuesday in the D-G-F Winter Jam Tournament.

“We knew coming in this was a good basketball team,” Molstre said. “We were worried about this game. It was a pretty even match up and be on top of our game defensively.”

D-G-F (5-3) found that out when W-A-O (6-3) cut what was once an 11-point lead down to four with about four minutes left in the second quarter.

Ponies forward HollyAnn Carlson, who led her team with 13 points, sparked the early run at cutting into the game.

W-A-O ran an offense off backdoor cuts setting up Carlson with easy shots near the basket.

It was something D-G-F noticed and the defense started clamping down forcing W-A-O to take the outside shot.

Yeah, they scored on that, too.

“When they started hitting those 3s,” Molstre said. “I started getting a little nervous.”

Fair enough.

The Rebels always had two players rotating in the paint while making sure any shot was going to be challenge.

That strategy along with the Ponies having some miscues helped D-G-F get a bit more breathing room.

Abby Yliniemi gave the Rebels a bit of a cushion by scoring a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds.

Yliniemi’s effort along with Kim Brinkman scoring 13 points was a bit of a breakthrough for the Rebels.

“We’ve had some girls play through injuries and Abby and Kim have been a couple,” Molstre said. “They’ve been those nagging injuries and it’s something we’ll have to work through.”

D-G-F had four players selected to the all-tournament team which includes Kelly Bergee, Brinkman, Sierra Senske and Yliniemi.

W-A-O’s Sarah Durand and Carlson were also named along with Menagha’s Tarah Cleveland and Hankinson’s Lindsey Stein.

D-G-F: Brinkman 13, Highness 2, Yliniemi 18, Bergee 8, Honek 7, Molstre 4, Senske 8, Madson 2.
