Fargo gives to military scholarship fundThe city of Fargo is honoring its military veterans with a $1,000 donation toward a new scholarship fund.
Fargo will make the first donation to the North Dakota Dollars for Scholars military scholarship fund today.
“The city of Fargo appreciates and values the distinguished efforts of our military families,” City Administrator Pat Zavoral said in a news release.
At least 10 $1,000 scholarships will be available in 2011 to students who are dependents of a military member, but more scholarships could be provided as additional donations are received, said Deb Gebeke, NDDFS board member.
North Dakota military members have been activated at one of the highest rates per capita in the nation, said retired Col. Tom Kenville of the North Dakota Air National Guard.
“These members and their families have made significant sacrifices for the good of our state and country, and this fund has been developed to honor or dedicated servicemen and women and their families,” Kenville said.
NDDFS works to increase the amount of scholarship dollars available to North Dakota students, and every penny donated goes back to a student, Gebeke said.
