Boys basketball: Rodenbiker, top-ranked boys upend No. 3 Spartans

A lot of expectations have been placed on the top-ranked Fargo Shanley boys basketball team this season.

The Deacons looked as if they have the potential to live up to all of it on Tuesday night.

Josh Rodenbiker scored 20 points to lead No. 1 Shanley to a convincing 82-68 Eastern Dakota Conference victory against No. 3 Fargo North at the Spartandome.

“We just came out a little faster tonight and looked the pushed the ball,” Rodenbiker said. “And we played good defense. That kind of shows how good we can be. We know we still have work to do, and we’re ready to get back at it.”

The Deacons (5-1, 4-1) were on fire from the opening tip, piling up points at a breakneck pace.

Led by Rodenbiker’s quickness and the inside-outside game of sophomore A.J. Jacobson, Shanley held a 50-31 halftime advantage as the stunned Spartan faithful watched in disbelief.

North (3-1, 2-1) could get anything started on offense.

And it appeared everything came easy for the Deacons on the other end.

Shanley, which opened the season as the top-ranked team in North Dakota Class A, rebounded nicely from a loss at home last week to unranked West Fargo.

This time they looked every bit the team to beat.

“They are a great team, there is no question about that,” North coach Dan Shultis said. “When a team comes out and shoot the way they do … we just can’t do that. Fifty points in the first half is just way too much, especially on your home floor.”

North made a run in the second half with help from Brady Bergeron and Nick Schultz.

Bergeron was all over the court, pouring in 16 second-half points.

Schultz rebounded from a slow first half to finish with 11.

Jacobson and Dylan Dunn each finished with 14, and freshman guard Patrick Strom had 13 for the Deacons.

“You just have to focus on getting better in practice and the games and everything else will take care of itself,” Rodenbiker said of the high expectations placed on the team. “I feel like this game helped us. But I feel like we still have a long way to go.”
