Gold coin discovered in Salvation Army kettle

A gold coin valued at $1,400 was discovered in a Salvation Army kettle over the weekend.

Capt. Bill Mealy announced Monday that a 1976 South African Krugerrand was wrapped in a $20 bill and placed in the kettle at Scheels in Fargo on Saturday night.

This is the eighth year in a row a donor has dropped a gold coin in a Fargo-Moorhead Salvation Army kettle.

Mealy also announced that the Salvation Army is $18,000 behind in fundraising compared to this time last year.

The Salvation Army aims to raise $650,000 by 2 p.m. Friday.

Volunteers are needed to fill 155 2½-hour shifts of bell ringing. To volunteer, call (701) 356-2689.
