Men's hockey: UND tops U-18 squad, Sioux commit Miller scores

GRAND FORKS – When J.T. Miller arrives on campus next fall, you can bet the UND men’s hockey team will remember him.

The U.S. Under-18 forward, who committed to the Sioux a couple of months ago, was the center of attention during UND’s 2-1 exhibition win over the American squad in Ralph Engelstad Arena on Saturday night.

Miller had multiple scuffles with his future teammates, launched a game-high six shots on net and scored the lone goal for the Americans to break up a shutout bid by Brad Eidsness.

“They definitely weren’t letting me off the hook,” said Miller, a native of East Palestine, Ohio. “I like it. I enjoy it. I like getting back at them. It shows a competitive nature on the ice.

“The Sioux are a real good team and I’m really excited to be here next year.”

UND feels the same.

“It’s good to see,” junior forward Mario Lamoureux said. “It’s good to see he’s got a little bit of an edge on him. It will be exciting when he comes in next year. Hopefully, he can help our team.”

The game started with Andrew MacWilliam throwing two huge hip checks on Miller. One of them flipped the 17-year-old over.

“That was a real nice hit,” Miller said. “I didn’t even see it coming. It happens. Like I said, they definitely weren’t letting me off the hook out there. I really didn’t know what to expect from them. I just wanted to play my best game and play hard like I always do.”

Miller certainly was relentless. With the clock winding down in the third period, he won a faceoff, went to the net and re-directed a Tyler Biggs shot to spoil a shutout for Eidsness, who played in his first game in a month.

Eidsness played the entire game, making 21 saves.

“I thought it was OK,” Eidsness said of his performance. “Not as sharp as I’d like to be, but it’s obviously been a period of time since I’ve played.

FIRST PERIOD: no scoring.
