Moorhead superintendent Kovash receives positive review

A school board evaluation of Moorhead Superintendent Lynne Kovash was “overwhelmingly positive,” Chairwoman Kris Thompson said.

The superintendent evaluation is not public data, but Thompson said the board is happy with Kovash’s efforts in meeting her goals.

Board members last week extended Kovash’s tenure as superintendent for another three years, with a 0.01 percent salary increase each year.

Kovash will be paid an annual salary of $152,314 in the 2011-12 school year and $154,598 in the 2012-13 school year.

Kovash said she had three priorities in her 2008-10 contract. Her

No. 1 priority was improving student learning, along with creating effective administrative policies and increasing community communication and involvement.

“We’re always looking at ways to increase and ensure every student is learning,” Kovash said.

Kovash said successful passage of a levy referendum in November was not part of her performance goals, but she said its approval may reflect better communication with the community.

The failure of a similar $156-per-pupil levy in 2009 likely failed due to what most called a “lack of communication” on the district’s part, she said. This year, the district was adamant about getting the word out, holding community listening sessions and numerous public meetings.

“(Passing the levy) ­wasn’t a specific goal,” Kovash said. One of her goals was working on communication and community involvement. “Certainly, the passing of the levy was one of the observable measurements of that priority.”
