Stabbing suspect pleads not guilty to escape

A convicted felon, named as “a person of interest” in connection with an October stabbing in Moorhead, pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges that he escaped federal custody.

Perry Terrance Paul, 36, was avoiding capture since he walked away from Centre Inc. in Fargo on Aug. 23.

He had been ordered to stay there after serving a 14-month sentence in a federal prison for a December 2009 conviction of violating probation.

U.S. Marshals arrested Paul on Wednesday in Browns Valley, Minn., about 100 miles south of Fargo, for questioning in the Oct. 22 stabbing of a West Fargo man in Moorhead.

Paul made his first appearance on the escape charge Thursday in Fargo’s U.S. District Court. If convicted on the escape charge, Paul faces up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both.

A jury trial has been scheduled for Feb. 8.
