Miller hits well-timed 3-pointers as West Fargo girls get past Shanley

West Fargo junior Hayley Miller knows she has to be ready at any moment.

As a 3-point specialist, Miller is fully aware that she can turn the tide of a game in an instant.

And that’s exactly what she did on Thursday night.

Miller drilled back-to-back 3-pointers late in the second half to help the Packers to a 50-46 Eastern Dakota Conference victory against Fargo Shanley at Shanley High School.

“We came into this game just looking to have fun and try our hardest,” said Miller, who finished with 11 points. “They played well. But, unfortunately (for them), we played better.”

Miller’s first 3-pointer of the half deflated the Shanley crowd after a big comeback and put West Fargo ahead 42-39 with 7 minutes, 35 seconds remaining.

She hit from beyond the arc again to give the Packers a 45-40 lead with 5:27 on the clock.

Shanley came within one point of the lead, but never fully recovered from the back-to-back daggers by Miller.

“(West Fargo) played really well,” Shanley coach Tim Jacobson said. “I credit them for their effort. I give ourselves credit for being there in the end and giving ourselves the opportunity to win. That’s what you want at the end of games. This is the way the EDC is going to be, and I kind of like it.”

Despite piling up 16 fouls, West Fargo controlled the tempo in the first half with a quick and physical approach.

Shanley held a 14-12 lead when the Packers broke the game open.

West Fargo’s offense took off, and the defense clamped down to turn the momentum in its favor.

A 17-4 run put the Packers ahead 30-18 late in the first half.

But the experienced Deacons roared back to cut the lead to 33-28 at halftime.

Katelyn Holland led West Fargo with 13 points in the first half.

Sarah Storandt had six points in the first half to lead a balanced Shanley offense.

Katelyn Holland finished with 18 points to pace the Packers.

Sophie Kenney and Nicole Carew each had 10 for the Deacons.

“I’m totally comfortable with (my role), but I don’t look for it every time,” Miller said. “I look to be a team player. I had to take it because it was open. It felt great. My teammates are probably speechless.”
