Farkas keys West Fargo boys basketball win against Shanley

With his team holding on for dear life and with time winding down on the shot clock, West Fargo senior Chase Farkas did what all leaders do.

He came through with a big-time shot when his team needed it most.

Farkas converted a three-point play with 37.8 seconds remaining to help West Fargo to a 64-61 Eastern Dakota Conference win against Fargo Shanley on Thursday at Shanley High School.

“It was definitely a momentum swinger,” Farkas said. “Everyone got fired up off of that. We just fed off of that and we were able to steal the game.”

Farkas’ game-changing play started with an inbounds pass with 2 seconds remaining on the shot clock.

The quick, 5-foot-9 point guard darted to the lane, caught the ball and drilled a layup before the buzzer sounded.

His free throw gave the Packers a 60-55 lead.

Josh Rodenbiker nailed a long 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 62-59. However, West Fargo hit their free throws down the stretch to seal it.

The game was a back-and-forth slugfest throughout.

Neither team managed much offense in the first half.

West Fargo held a 23-22 halftime lead despite shooting 33 percent from the floor.

“I thought they did a good job of sticking to their game plan, slowing the pace down and moving the ball around,” Shanley coach Leon Knodel said. “… They slowed down the tempo, which didn’t help us at all. We had opportunities. We just didn’t take advantage of the opportunities we had.”

Shanley held a 24-23 lead early in the second half.

But West Fargo grabbed momentum with a pair of 3-pointers by Brock Evenson.

Evenson’s second

3-pointer gave the Packers a 34-28 advantage with 13:13 on the clock.

A third Evenson 3-pointer made the score 50-39.

Shanley raced back in the final six minutes.

Farkas and Justin Schock each finished with 13 points for West Fargo.

Rodenbiker led Shanley with 15.

“We knew coming in they were one of the best teams in the state,” Farkas said. “We just wanted to show them what we could do. We knew we could do it. We wanted to show them we will be in the mix in the end.”
