It's official: Auburn, Oregon to play for national football championshipEUGENE, Ore. – No. 1 Auburn and No. 2 Oregon will meet in the BCS championship game in Glendale, Ariz., on Jan. 10.
It’s a matchup of title game first-timers and two of the best offenses in the country.
Auburn quarterback Cam Newton will most likely be a Heisman Trophy winner by the time he gets to Arizona. It’s just as likely there will still be questions about a pay-to-play scheme the NCAA has been investigating surrounding Newton’s failed recruitment to Mississippi State. The NCAA cleared Newton to play last Wednesday.
On the field, Newton has been peerless, accounting for 50 touchdowns.
Auburn’s last national championship came in 1957, and the Tigers will try to make it five straight BCS crowns for the Southeastern Conference.
Oregon has never won a national title. Heisman hopeful LaMichael James and the Ducks lead the nation in scoring.
