Gays can serve country proudlyI have served 21 years in the military, first as an NCO in the 82nd Airborne and now as an officer in the National Guard. Over the years, I have met many gay Americans who have proudly served in the military. All served proudly, all served hiding their true identity, and all wished they could have continued to serve but feared reprisal. To me, this is unconscionable and unconstitutional.
In the 1950s, the military led the way in social reform by assimilating African-Americans into integrated service nearly a full decade before society moved on the issue. This time, the military is behind the curve. It is time the military moved forward with an advanced society and the modern world and allow gays/lesbians to openly and proudly serve our country.
