Devils Lake soldier killed in AustriaFormer Devils Lake, N.D., resident Army Sgt. Darren M. Blazer died in Austria on Nov. 16.
Stars and Stripes, a Department of Defense-authorized news organization, reported that Blazer was killed in an accident while vacationing in Austria, citing a press release from the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade.
Brigade spokesman Sgt. 1st Class Christopher DeHart said Blazer fell down a cliff near Ehrenberg Castle, near Reutte, Austria, Stars and Stripes reported.
“An Austrian police spokesman in Reutte said Friday that Blazer had been visiting the castle with his family, and they decided to hike up a mountain nearby,” according to the Stars and Stripes story.
An obituary for Blazer said, “He had a very profound interest in castles, their history and also exploring them.”
Funeral services for Blazer are at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake.
