Crashes, cars in ditch keep patrol busyThe North Dakota Highway Patrol responded to numerous crashes and other calls for service in 15 counties in the southeast corner of the state this past week as snow and other weather conditions caused problems.
From Monday through Thursday, the Highway Patrol logged 54 property damage crashes, four injury crashes, 120 motorist assists, 16 abandoned vehicles and 40 other calls for service.
The bulk of the calls were for vehicles that had gone into the ditch and needed to be towed out.
In many cases, driving too fast for the conditions was the main reason vehicles left the road, the Highway Patrol said.
For the duration of the holiday weekend, the Highway Patrol is advising drivers to phone 511 to check current road conditions before heading out. Officials are also reminding drivers to use seat belts.
