Donation to Hockey Day Minnesota benefits regionOn behalf of the entire Moorhead Youth Hockey Association and the Moorhead High School hockey program, we would like to thank Moorhead Public Service and the MPS Commission for their generous sponsorship of Hockey Day Minnesota on Feb. 12, 2011.
We all understand that money is tight, but we believe this is exactly how the MPS community marketing funds should be used: to sponsor events that bring together and promote the community and provide MPS with a large audience for its mandated energy conservation marketing.
Based on the experience with past Hockey Days in Baudette, Hermantown and St. Paul, this event will provide great exposure not only to our youth hockey program but especially to the city of Moorhead, MPS and all our sponsors. There will be a whole day of coverage, including the two featured varsity games (Wayzata vs. Roseau and Moorhead vs. Hill Murray), many other boys and girls games, the Gophers playing the University of Denver (with Moorhead hockey alumnus John Lee) and St. Louis playing the Wild (with Moorhead hockey alumnus Matt Cullen). We expect 4,000 to 5,000 attendees on-site. Thanks to MPS’ sponsorship, all MPS customers may attend the events free of charge. FSN will broadcast the entire day to their 2 million households in the region. This coverage will “put Moorhead on the map” with positive news.
Moorhead Youth Hockey and Spuds high school events, such as our 13 tournaments this season alone, including the VFW Bantam A State Tournament, support many local businesses. Participants fill up local hotels and spend significantly on food, entertainment, etc. This will be no exception, with many teams and spectators coming to the event from out of town. More families may decide to settle here in Moorhead, like the MYHA families from places such as Roseau, Grand Forks and Fargo who already made that decision.
We also thank the Cullen family for their generous gift that allowed us to start the outdoor rink last year. That rink enabled us to apply for the privilege of hosting Hockey Day Minnesota – which truly may be a once-in-a-lifetime event. Thanks also to the more than 20 other local businesses and their substantial monetary and in-kind support and to the many volunteers who allow us to finish the rink and plan the best Hockey Day Minnesota yet. After Hockey Day, the outdoor rink will serve our almost 500 players for many years to come. It will allow us to continue our tradition to provide one of the best and most affordable youth hockey programs in the state of Minnesota, where all players have the opportunity to develop not only their athletic skills but also the educational components of leadership, team, self confidence, time management and goal development.
Again, thank you, MPS, for your sponsorship and your commitment to our community and youth hockey!
