Turkey and the fixings
Turkeys were counted by the dozen and potatoes by the hundreds as volunteers packed area kitchens Wednesday to prepare a holiday meal en masse.
Moorhead’s Trinity Lutheran and St. Joseph’s Catholic churches host an annual community meal, which served more than 1,000 people last year, volunteer Ann Schellack said.
On Wednesday, about 20 volunteers peeled 350 pounds of potatoes, which will be cooked and mashed this morning. Cashwise is preparing and delivering the 750 pounds of turkey that will be served, Schellack said.
Over at West Fargo’s Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, a similar meal was taking shape Wednesday as volunteers roasted 75 turkeys and cut up 80 loaves of bread for the church’s homemade dressing.
Volunteer Steve Perreault said the church is planning for about 700 people today, but turnout will likely depend on the weather.
“We invited every snowplow driver in the county,” Perreault said. “They can come in and have a warm meal – and maybe they’ll plow our parking lot on the way out.”
