Schnepf: A year later, stick a fork in this teamIt was last year at this time when Brad Childress had plenty to be thankful for. Mainly, Brett Favre.
Favre just completed an amazing 88 percent of his passes in a sold-out Metrodome where the Minnesota Vikings routed Seattle 35-9 and improved their record to 9-1.
The Viking fanatics gave Favre a standing ovation. Seattle head coach Jim Mora gave Favre a chance to quit while he was ahead.
“Would you please retire?” Mora pleaded to Favre.
Of course, Mora’s father is best known more for his infamous 2001 post-game tirade as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts: “Playoffs? Are you kidding me? Playoffs? I just hope we can win a game.”
Had Brad Childress not been fired as the Vikings coach Monday morning, he could have used the same line at his weekly press conference. Heck, Vikings assistant Leslie Frazier should’ve used the line when he was introduced as the Vikings’ eighth head coach Monday afternoon.
Playoffs? Are you kidding me? Frazier just hopes this disheveled group of Vikings can win at least one more game this season.
Sunday’s embarrassing 31-3 loss to the Packers put a fork in the 3-7 Vikings. They are as done as that 25-pound turkey Clark Griswold overcooked in National Lampoon’s “Christmas Vacation.”
“Save the neck for me, Clark.”
There has been plenty of turkey to go around from this disastrous Vikings season.
Let’s start with Chilly, who should’ve been fired two weeks ago – if owner Zygi Wilf really harbored any notion of playoffs.
Chilly leaves his five-year stay in Minneapolis with a 40-37 record. At least he joins Bud Grant, Jerry Burns and Dennis Green as the only Viking coaches with winning records.
But he also joins Mike Tice and Les Steckel as Viking coaches who really had no business being NFL head coaches. If you think Tice had problems with the “Love Boat” scandal, Chilly couldn’t navigate his own ship – which started sinking the moment Favre was allowed to miss training camp again.
So should Zygi have done what Jerry Jones did in Dallas? Get rid of your coach when your team still has a shot at the playoffs? After all, Dallas has won two straight games since Wade Phillips was fired – keeping the Cowboys’ hopes alive for the playoffs.
Playoffs? Are you kidding me?
The way Favre is throwing passes to the wrong team, the way the offensive line has forgot how to block and the way the defense has quit tackling, I don’t think a change two weeks ago would’ve made any difference.
While Frazier will try to at least win a game for the Vikings, Chilly will float away into the sunset with his $6 million. Perhaps he can hook up in Bermuda and compare notes with Tim Brewster – the Gophers head coach who got the axe midseason but left with more than $1 million.
Perhaps he can make amends with Favre in Bermuda. Who’s to say that ankle injury is suddenly a season-ender for Favre.
I’m with cousin Eddie. Save the neck for me … because I’ve got to believe the servings of turkey the Vikings have dished out have got to be running out.
