ND Class A state volleyball roundup: Bismarck gets past Grand Forks Red River for title
That’s when the Demons, whose team slogan this season was, “Rock the Sparkle,” were forced to retire their glittery headbands because they didn’t meet uniform guidelines.
It still couldn’t stop them from shining.
Anna Hruby had 15 kills and three blocks to help Bismarck defeat defending champion Grand Forks Red River 25-23, 25-22, 25-14 to secure the school’s first state crown since 1985 during the North Dakota Class A state volleyball tournament final at the Minot State Dome.
“I knew at the beginning that these girls had the potential to get here and to do some great things,” Bismarck coach Jessica Andersen said. “But we had to take one match at a time. We had a lot of things that we had to learn and fix along the way before we could get here.”
Bismarck was fundamentally solid from the start, digging out powerful hits by a potent Roughriders front row.
The Demons block kept senior Emily Asche and sophomore Hadley Steffen from taking off early.
At the same time, Hruby and Josette Glatt found the floor often.
“You always hear coaches say that defense wins championships,” said Red River coach Carolyn Olson, who has led the Roughriders to five state titles in 16 seasons. “That’s what won Bismarck High this championship tonight.”
