Men's basketball: Bison cap weekend with win, Defeat Denver, end BTI Invite 2-for-3

EUGENE, Ore. – Eric Carlson had 21 points and seven rebounds to lead North Dakota State to a 65-54 victory over Denver in the Basketball Travelers Invitational at McArthur Court on Sunday.

Michael Tveidt added 11 points and the Bison got 10 points apiece from Drew Lundberg and Nate Zastrow.

“Michael had a big weekend all the way around,” said head coach Saul Phillips. “And we got some major help from TrayVonn Wright in the second half.”

The freshman Wright went 4-for-4 from the field with seven rebounds for the Bison, providing what Phillips said were some real difficult adjustments for Denver.

The Bison (2-1) won two of three games on the weekend trip, falling only to Oregon in overtime on Friday night.

NDSU was 18-for-22 from the foul line, including 16-for-19 after halftime.

Brian Stafford had 15 points and Chase Hallam scored 14 for Denver, which had a 28-18 lead with 5:19 left in the first half.

The Bison answered with 10 straight points before Denver (0-3) got a pair of free throws from Hallam for a 30-28 halftime lead.

Phillips said going to a smaller lineup before halftime was the difference, and cites Lundberg and Zastrow as the catalysts with their solid guard play.

Carlson converted a three-point play at the 18:25 mark of the second half to put NDSU ahead for good 31-30, and five straight points from Tveidt capped an 18-2 Bison run.

The Bison had a 27-20 advantage in total rebounds, including nine offensive rebounds that led to 14 second-chance points.

“We’re going to be pretty solid this year,” Phillips said. “We’re not a finished product, but we sure like the pieces.”

Phillips said his team will be working on some screening situations and motions offenses in the upcoming week, preparing to play Mayville State in the regular-season home opener at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bison Sports Arena.
